Market Day Report, November 20, 2004
(as remembered by Sondra Swauger)
The last Market Day of Athens' Own was held on a brisk, November day. Despite the often
looming rain clouds, I think everyone who attended had a great time! Dawn Chorus coffee was
served throughout the day to keep us warm, along with home-made Chili (both free!).
Hot Diggity Dog sold hot food throughout the event as well.
A large table of yard-sale type items was set up at the front of the venue, and everything
from books to household items and clothing was absolutely FREE!
Kathy Jacobson, owner of Candelaria Crafts hand-poured and sold 100% beeswax tapers.
This was a fascinating display, and the sights and sounds of hot wax being poured mixed with
the fragrant aroma of honey from the beeswax was greatly aesthetic. She uses an ancient hend-
pouring technique that dates back to the Renaissance in Europe.
Tim Lemoine created and sold his stunning paintings, Paul Tescher sold gorgeous hand-
made earrings created from antique beads, Ken Scott created beautiful metal sculptures, Denise
Scott showcased her excellent photography and sold various yard-sale items, Chelsea Hindenach
sold hand-sewn, reusable menstrual pads, and I knitted and sold scarves. (If I left anyone out, my
apologies!)
The vendors had a chance to wander around and see what everyone else brought to showcase
and sell, creating a wonderful opportunity for communing and networking. Everyone who
stopped in to see what was going on also seemed to enjoy themselves.
Though the turnout was relatively small this time, I think that the event has the potential to
become something much larger. And indeed, this turnout was larger than past Market Days, I am
told. I am excited to see the growth from this Market Days to the next!
Let's make the next Market Days of Athens' Own even better than the last!
