Local group encourages health/safety precautions during block party
Athens is abuzz as Halloween and block-party rapidly approach. As you make the final
touches on your perfect costume and make last minute arrangements for out-of town guests, the
possibility of being injured or contracting an illness is probably the last thing on your mind.
However, with 30,000 people (give or take) converging in a relatively small area with alcohol a
plenty, health and safety risks will undoubtedly abound.
Athens' own is a local organization that strives to build a stronger community. In an effort to
promote public health and safety during the upcoming event, the group is posting a flyer with the
heading 'Attention!' around town. The flyer features several helpful tips that will ensure a safe
and healthy Halloween weekend for everyone.
Just in case you don't encounter this flyer, or are enjoying the party too much to notice, here
are a few tips to keep in mind.
Wash your hands with so many people and so much waste, germs will be everywhere!
Frequent hand washing with soap and hot water throughout the night will greatly reduce the
number of creepy crawlies that could potentially make you ill.
Stay clean germs are easily spread by sharing drinks, smokes and kisses. Also, never leave
drinks unattended. You never know what can get into your glass when you're not looking
(intentionally or not).
Practice safe sex this shouldn't need further explaining, but with a lot of people and a lot of
alcohol, the potential for sexually transmitted infections is greatly increased.
Drive safely or if you've had any intoxicating substances, don't drive at all! Getting to the
party a few minutes sooner isn't worth the risk of injuring yourself, a friend or anyone else not
to mention the risk of getting a DUI.
Avoid being a victim always walk with a partner and know how to defend yourself. It's
easy to get lost in the crowd, and not everyone has your best interest in mind.
Support law enforcement, emergency officials, etcetera they're there for your protection,
not to bust up the party.
If everyone keeps these simple tips in mind, block-party will be an event everyone
remembers fondly (even if not clearly!)
Have a safe and healthy Halloween from everyone at Athens' Own.
